PGPC secures ISO certifications for Mak-Ban and Tiwi steam fields

Philippine Geothermal Production Company, Inc. (PGPC) has secured international certifications for its Mak-Ban and Tiwi geothermal steam fields, spotlighting its compliance with global standards on environmental management and occupational health and safety.

PGPC announced that it achieved ISO 14001:2015 for Environmental Management Systems and ISO 45001:2018 for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. The certifications were awarded by Bureau Veritas.

“This milestone affirms PGPC’s alignment with the highest global standards in environmental management and occupational health and safety,” said Napoleon Saporsantos Jr., President of PGPC, in an official statement. “This reflects the company’s proactive approach to risk management, regulatory compliance, and safe operations across our geothermal assets.”

PGPC handles geothermal steam fields in Tiwi, Albay, and Mak-Ban, which spans through Batangas and Laguna, with a combined capacity of up to 300 megawatts (MW). The company is also exploring additional concession areas in Luzon that are estimated to bring an additional 300 MW of baseload renewable energy.

ISO 14001 certification is awarded to companies with an established and structured environmental management system- specifically one that identifies, manages, and continuously improves its environmental performance. ISO 45001, on the other hand, highlights workplace health and safety management systems designed to prevent occupational injuries.

PGPC is a wholly owned subsidiary of SM Investments Corporation, which is one of the country’s largest conglomerates. The achievements add to the company’s list of certifications as it continues to operate and expand its geothermal portfolio.

As geothermal operators expand capacity and develop new concession areas, will adherence to internationally recognized safety and environmental standards become the industry baseline?
