AdventEnergy, the retail electricity supply arm of Aboitiz Power Corporation, has signed an 896-kilowatt retail electricity supply agreement with Viking Cold Storage Inc. as it expands further into Mindanao’s growing cold chain sector.
The agreement covers Viking Cold Storage’s one-hectare facility in Bunawan, Davao City, which is equipped with loading docks, freezer and chiller rooms, and an ethylene glycol refrigeration system connected to a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
The facility also houses two 10-metric-ton blast freezers designed to help maintain food storage quality.
Located near Davao City’s airport, seaport, and downtown area, the facility serves businesses requiring temperature-controlled storage to extend product shelf life.
According to AdventEnergy, the partnership forms part of its continued expansion in Mindanao following the implementation of the Energy Regulatory Commission’s Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) program in the region in 2024.
Under the RCOA framework, qualified electricity consumers are allowed to directly choose and transact with their preferred power supplier.
“The facilities we power do not operate in isolation. Rather, they are part of a chain that feeds communities,” said AdventEnergy Vice President for Retail Energy Sales and Services Catherine Del Villar-Pasilaban.
“In the cold chain industry, reliable power is not optional, but a critical business imperative that keeps food safe, fresh, and on the table,” she added.
The company also noted that cold chain infrastructure has received increasing government support in recent years. In 2024, the Department of Agriculture allocated PHP 3 billion for 99 cold storage facilities planned for 2025 to help reduce postharvest losses.
Meanwhile, Viking Cold Storage President Jimmy Ngo said entering the retail electricity market would help ensure stable and competitive energy supply for the facility’s operations.
“Viking Cold Storage was built to set the highest standard for cold storage in the Philippines. Entering the retail electricity market gives us the confidence that our facility will have the reliable, competitive energy it needs to deliver for our clients,” Ngo said.
The deal adds to AdventEnergy’s growing portfolio of cold chain customers, following a recent retail electricity supply agreement with Frabelle Cold Storage Corporation covering facilities in Navotas.
As cold chain infrastructure continues to expand in the Philippines, how important will reliable electricity supply become in strengthening the country’s food logistics and storage systems?
