Petron confirms Bataan fuel storage expansion plans

Petron Corp. has confirmed plans to expand fuel storage facilities at its Limay terminal in Bataan, prioritizing additional capacity for jet fuel and biodiesel as demand growth and supply reliability remain key concerns for the Philippine energy sector.

“We confirm that Petron Corporation is exploring the installation of additional storage facilities for fuel products and biodiesel at its terminal in Limay, Bataan as part of its continuing effort to improve reliability of supply of various fuel products and the efficiency of its operations,” the company said in its June 10 disclosure.

Petron said it is prioritizing the construction of one storage tank with a capacity of 25,000 barrels for Jet A-1 fuel and three additional coconut methyl ester (CME) storage facilities with a combined capacity of 48,000 liters.

As part of the project’s initial phase, the company has begun the Environmental Impact Assessment process for the amendment of the Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) covering the Limay Terminal. Petron said it conducted its Information and Education Campaign in late March and has scheduled public scoping activities on June 17.

The company underscored the strategic importance of the Bataan facility in the country’s aviation fuel supply chain.

“The Limay Terminal is a key distributor of jet A-1 fuel to airports and other terminals. The Jet A-1 Storage Tank will increase the total days of supply of jet A-1 at the Limay Terminal to meet the growing demand for jet A-1 fuel and provide supply even during periods of high demand,” Petron said.

The additional CME storage facilities are also expected to support compliance with the government’s biodiesel blending requirements.

“The CME Storage Tank will allow the Company to maintain at the terminal a consistent supply of biodiesel to comply with the government-mandated blending,” the company added.

The company said construction of the planned storage tanks is targeted to begin in the latter part of 2026, with project completion targeted for early 2028.

Petron noted that the final investment amount has yet to be determined.

“The investment amount for the proposed project, which will be funded from cash generated from operations, will be finalized and the applicable internal corporate approvals will be obtained once the ECC is obtained,” the company said.
