Bago Negros Energy Corporation (BNEC), a subsidiary of Thailand-based Sermsang Power Corporation Public Company Limited (SSP), has started construction of its 150-megawatt (MW) Bago Wind Farm in Negros Occidental, marking a major renewable energy investment that is expected to begin commercial operations by 2027.
The project officially broke ground on June 10 in Barangay Calumanggan, with representatives from the Department of Energy (DOE), local government officials, and company executives in attendance.
Once completed, the wind farm will become the largest project undertaken in Bago City, spanning seven barangays — Calumanggan, Napoles, Taloc, Sampinit, Busay, Balingasag, and Lag-asan. The facility will consist of 23 wind turbines with a combined installed capacity of 150 MW.
SSP said construction is expected to take about one year, with the project aimed at increasing clean energy generation while creating jobs, supporting local economic activity, and improving community infrastructure.
The company described the development as a major milestone, noting that it is the largest renewable energy project in SSP’s history.
“This milestone marks the official start of construction and stands as the company’s largest renewable energy project since its founding,” SSP said. “It demonstrates SSP’s capabilities and strong position as a developer of diverse renewable energy projects globally.”
The groundbreaking ceremony was led by SSP Chief Operating Officer and BNEC Vice President Passakorn Panyaratanakorn, alongside Bago City Mayor Mayette Javellana, Vice Mayor Andrew Torres, and Renewable Energy Management Bureau Assistant Director Ruby De Guzman.
Mayor Javellana said the project is expected to bring economic benefits to the city.
“We also had the ground breaking of Bago Negros Energy Corporation para sa isa ka daku nga proyekto – a 150MW Wind Power Project in our City which will mean more jobs for our people and of course will spur economic growth and will make our City the Renewable Energy Hub in the Negros Island Region,” she said.
The Bago Wind Farm forms part of SSP’s five-year expansion plan, which targets 1,000 MW of total installed renewable energy capacity across its portfolio.
