Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) recorded a 0.4% increase in electricity sales volume in January 2025, reaching 4,061 gigawatt-hours (GWh) compared to 4,045 GWh in January 2024. The growth, though marginal, reflects slower demand in the residential and industrial sectors, which was offset by a modest rise in commercial energy consumption.

Meralco Senior Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer Ferdinand Geluz noted that the January 2024 high figures were due to the effects of El Nino.

Residential sales in January 2025 stood at 1,425 GWh, a 0.2% increase from January 2024’s 1,422 GWh.  Geluz said the slowdown in household electricity consumption was largely due to long holiday weekends.

Industrial sales, on the other hand, declined 0.3% to 1,059 GWh from 1,063 GWh last year, as the company’s major accounts within food and beverage and steel industries experienced intermittent shutdowns.

Offsetting the slowdown in residential sales and decline in industrial sales is a slight increase in commercial sales, which rose 1.04% to 1,564 GWh, up from 1,548 GWh in January 2024. This sector, Geluz said, was also affected by long holiday weekends, which impacted business operations.
