At the Giga Summit 2025 held in Makati, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) spotlighted its strategic push to fuse artificial intelligence and smart technologies with energy infrastructure—signaling a bold pivot toward a future-ready power grid in the Philippines.
Meralco Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ronnie L. Aperocho, speaking at the event, highlighted the central role AI plays in modernizing the company’s operations:
“We are future proofing Meralco’s distribution network through layers of different initiatives driven by innovation, big data and analytics, and powered by artificial intelligence.”
Among Meralco’s flagship innovations are the Wireless Private Network (WPN) to boost grid automation and security; the Meralco Data Platform (MDP), which leverages AI and big data to optimize operations; and the Meralco Interactive Data Assistant (MIDAS), an AI-powered customer service tool.
Emphasizing the broader theme of integration, Aperocho further explains, “Our theme, The Fusion of Power and Intelligence, captures the reality that infrastructure and technology must go hand-in-hand with vision, policy, and people.”
Held on April 24–25 at The Fifth at Rockwell, Makati City, the Giga Summit 2025—organized by the Meralco Power Academy—served as a key forum for knowledge exchange among energy leaders, experts, and policymakers.
