A solar-powered water system installed by One MERALCO Foundation (OMF) has improved water security for Barangay Guinsang-an, South Cotabato, addressing long-standing challenges in access to clean and reliable water.
The project, part of OMF’s Water Electrification Program, provides the rural community with a solar photovoltaic (PV) system to power its water facilities. Previously, local farmers depended on deep wells and faced difficulties in affording the electricity costs needed to operate a tap water system managed by the Barangay Water System Association (BAWASA).
“Our savings in maintaining the water system can be allotted for other projects. We will strive to extend our facilities to more purok without access to water,” said BAWASA Administrator Cris Valencia.
Valencia added that power outages frequently disrupted the water supply, posing additional challenges for residents.
The solar PV system now ensures a more stable and cost-efficient water distribution process. The BAWASA Administrator noted that the savings from reduced energy expenses could be redirected to social services and expanding water access to nearby areas.
Meanwhile, MERALCO Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ronnie L. Aperocho highlighted the social impact of electrification programs like this, saying it empowers remote communities.
Additionally, OMF President Jeffrey O. Tarayao emphasized that the solar-powered system ensures long-term access to clean water for the current and future generations.
Since 2022, OMF’s Water Access Electrification program has benefited over 800 households across communities in Quezon, Bulacan, and South Cotabato.
This initiative underscores the role of renewable energy in uplifting marginalized communities by improving access to basic needs such as water.
