SMC switching on 690MW in BESS facilities in early 2022

SMC Global Power Holdings Corporation, the power generating arm of San Miguel Corporation (SMC), said 690 megawatts (MW) in battery energy storage system (BESS) projects would be operational early this year.

The said projects form part of the 31 BESS facilities with a capacity of 1,000MW that the country’s second largest power generator is building. The remaining 310MW is up for completion by the end of 2022.

SMC previously said it has invested over $1 billion to simultaneously build the facilities. Among the BESS project sites are Masinloc, Zambales and Malita, Davao Occidental, where the company has existing coal power plants; as well as in Jasaan, Misamis Oriental and Maco, Davao De Oro.

According to SMC President Ramon Ang, the BESS could make power supply more stable and reliable, particularly areas that could not attract investments because of poor or unpredictable power supply.

SMC Global Power has partnered with several foreign firms to build and develop some of its BESS projects.
