AboitizPower’s joint venture with Norway firm Scatec, SN Aboitiz Power Group (SNAP) has partnered with GEDI China Energy to develop the battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Magat hydroelectric power plant through an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract.
Manila Bulletin reported that the expansion marked Phase 2 of the 16-megawatt (MW) Magat BESS project, which SNAP is developing with China Energy Engineering Group’s subsidiary.
According to SNAP, construction for the second phase is set to begin in the first half of 2025, while commercial operations are slated for the first half of 2026.
This development builds on Phase 1 of the Magat BESS, a 24 MW project that began operations last January.
GEDI Deputy General Manager Chuangang Guo expressed appreciation for the opportunity to work on the project and emphasized their commitment to quality and efficiency in its execution.
Meanwhile, SNAP’s President and CEO Joseph Yu said the expansion reflects the company’s dedication to advancing renewable energy and accelerating the country’s transition to sustainability.
SNAP currently operates four facilities in three provinces across the Philippines, with a combined net sellable capacity of 201.55 MW.
