The Department of Energy (DOE) said it needs Php7.6 billion for it to be able to implement the clean energy scenario (CES) for 2022 under its Philippine Energy Plan 2020-2040 (PEP).
“To realize the targets set in the [PEP], the country needs Php7.6 Trillion pesos in the clean energy scenario,” Michael Sinocruz, Assistant Director at the DOE’s Energy Policy Planning Bureau said at The Philippine Renewable Energy Virtual Conference held recently.
Sinocruz stressed the importance of expanding the use of renewable energy (RE) and other technologies as well as building up energy resilience as envisioned in the CES.
“The clean energy scenario is deemed to pave the way for the [PEP] vision of energy security [through] sustainable energy, resilient infrastructures, competitive energy sectors, smart homes and cities, and empowered consumers”, he said.
He further explained that the country’s energy consumption for the last three years came mostly from RE making up 32.8% share of the total energy supply, followed by oil with a 32.1% share. “2020 showed an increase of RE consumption in the household sector, particularly biomass,” Sinocruz said.
Meanwhile, oil consumption dropped to 29% due to the slowdown of the country’s economic activity, particularly the transport sector, as the government implemented quarantine measures during the height of the pandemic. “Only household consumption increased and became the major user of energy with 31% share of the total energy consumption. This was due to the work-from-home measures during the pandemic”, he added.
Sinocruz also outlined policies, programs, and laws benefiting both consumers and industry players to ensure a timely implementation of the energy program.
