The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has positioned itself at the forefront of a nationwide push for energy efficiency, defining it as a cornerstone for economic progress. During the Philippine Energy Efficiency Alliance Inc. (PE2)‘s Energy Efficiency Day 2025 held on March 20, the ERC joined a coalition of leaders from government, business, education, finance, and consumer sectors to pledge their support for making energy efficiency the “first fuel” of the economy.
ERC Chairperson and CEO Atty. Monalisa Dimalanta discussed the transformative potential of sustainable energy practices. In her keynote address, she outlined the ERC’s proactive regulatory efforts aimed at reshaping how energy is consumed and managed across the nation.
“The Commission’s initiatives to innovate and transform through its regulatory strategies to foster EE among both industry players and consumers” were central to her message, as reported in a LinkedIn post by the ERC.
Among the initiatives highlighted were the ERC’s policies on “Time-of-Use (TOU) Pricing, the Interruptible Load Program (ILP), the Net-Metering Program, and on the adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs).” These measures, Chairperson Dimalanta noted, are designed to encourage smarter energy use and pave the way for a more sustainable future. She also emphasized the pivotal role of Distribution Utilities (DUs) and Electric Cooperatives (ECs), urging them to evolve beyond traditional power provision into active facilitators of energy efficiency.
The event marked a significant moment for the Philippines, which Dimalanta described as standing “at the cusp of an energy efficiency revolution.” With the ERC’s leadership, the focus on innovative regulations and collaboration across sectors signals a broader shift toward sustainability as a driver of economic resilience.
