Mapúa campuses shift to 100% renewable energy with ACEN RES

Premier engineering school Mapúa University has partnered with ACEN Renewable Energy Solutions (ACEN RES), the retail arm of Ayala-led ACEN, to power its Manila and Makati campuses entirely with renewable energy.
Under the deal, ACEN RES will supply electricity from its solar, wind, and geothermal assets, helping the schools avoid around 350 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions every month. The partnership was formalized through the “Powered by Renewable Energy” badge ceremony in Intramuros, attended by students, faculty, and key leaders from both institutions.
The shift was made possible via the Department of Energy’s Green Energy Option Program (GEOP), which allows end-users with a minimum monthly peak demand of 100 kilowatts to contract renewable energy from licensed suppliers without additional infrastructure such as rooftop solar panels.
Mapúa president and CEO Dr. Dodjie S. Maestrecampo said the transition aligns with the university’s values and supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly on affordable clean energy, sustainable cities, and climate action.
ACEN senior vice president and head of market transformation Tony Valdez underscored the shared vision for sustainability, noting ACEN’s target to achieve 100% renewable energy generation by 2025.
This follows a similar move in May 2025 when Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna also shifted to 100% renewable energy through ACEN RES.
With this latest agreement, Mapúa aims to become one of the greenest campuses in the Philippines.
What do you think about more universities making the switch to 100% renewable energy—should this be the new norm for higher education institutions?
