Vena Energy commits PHP 20-B wind project in Northern Samar

Singapore-based Vena Energy, through its local unit Gemini Wind Energy Corp. (GWEC), is investing PHP 20.2 billion to build a 304-megawatt (MW) wind farm in Northern Samar, with operations targeted by December 2026.

The project, which spans 777 hectares across 15 towns, was among the winning bids under the Department of Energy’s Green Energy Auction Program (GEAP) in 2023. It has also been certified as an energy project of national significance and identified by the Board of Investments as a strategic investment, Business World reports.

GWEC said the wind farm “offers long-term solutions to the perennial shortfall in electric power supply to the Philippine economy and fully supports the objectives of the Renewable Energy Act of 2008.” The company added that wind power is the “most commercially feasible” option for Northern Samar, taking advantage of the province’s geography while minimizing environmental impacts compared with coal and diesel.

The facility will install 38 new wind turbine generators with capacities of up to 9 MW each. It will expand the ongoing 206-MW San Isidro Wind Project, a P19-billion joint venture of Vena Energy, Vivant Energy, and Aboitiz Renewables. Together, the projects will cover areas in San Isidro, Northern Samar and Calbayog City, Samar, about 235 kilometers north of Tacloban City.

“This venture will not only provide clean energy but will also serve as a model for future renewable energy projects across the country,” Jhon Allen Berbon, head of the Northern Samar Provincial Economic Development and Investment Promotions Office, told Malaya Business Insight. “With this, Northern Samar will position itself not only as the Green Energy Capital of Eastern Visayas but also of the Philippines.”

He noted that the wind farm is expected to generate thousands of jobs during construction and sustain hundreds of positions once operational. “The project not only represents a robust investment in clean energy but also underscores our dedication to fostering economic growth and job creation in Northern Samar,” he added.

Vena Energy currently operates six renewable energy assets in the Philippines with a combined capacity of 330.8 MW, including facilities in Negros Occidental, Rizal, Leyte, Ilocos Norte, and Bukidnon. Globally, the company has built a renewable portfolio of 9.7 gigawatts across the Asia-Pacific.
