Meralco says it supports rooftop solar, seeks clearer safety rules

Manila Electric Company (Meralco) clarified that it is not opposed to renewable energy or rooftop solar installations, saying its push for clearer guidelines is focused on safety and proper installation rather than restricting consumer choice.

In a statement issued Saturday, Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga said the company recognizes the growing interest in solar energy as consumers look for ways to reduce electricity costs and support cleaner energy sources.

“We want to be clear: Meralco is not against the adoption of renewable energy or the use of solar equipment,” Zaldarriaga said.

The distribution utility also acknowledged public concerns surrounding possible regulations involving solar installations.

“We also recognize the concerns and anxieties raised by consumers regarding regulations, and we want to address these with openness and understanding,” he said.

According to Meralco, its main concern is ensuring that solar systems are installed safely and according to proper standards. It said it is calling for “clear, standardized guidelines” from the appropriate government agencies to help ensure installations are done correctly and safely, similar to practices already implemented in other countries.

“This is not a fiscal issue, nor an attempt to impose control, but a matter of public safety,” Zaldarriaga said.

Meralco also clarified that it does not have regulatory authority over solar installations. However, the utility encouraged customers to coordinate with their local distribution utility or electric cooperative before installing rooftop solar systems. Distribution utilities help manage and maintain connections to the power grid.

“When systems are installed without prior coordination or our awareness, our ability to respond or provide assistance becomes limited,” Zaldarriaga said. “Our request is simply for customers to inform their respective utility — whether Meralco, or the distribution utility/electric cooperative in their area.”

The company said the request is intended to help ensure safety, system compatibility, and awareness among all parties involved. It added that it remains committed to working with consumers and government agencies to support what it described as a safe and informed transition toward renewable energy.

“Ultimately, this is about education, cooperation and shared responsibility,” Zaldarriaga said.

As more households consider rooftop solar systems to help manage electricity costs, should clearer nationwide standards for residential solar installations be established?
