Meralco, UPEEP partner to build skills for solar, battery, nuclear energy

Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Professional Electrical Engineers of the Philippines, Inc. (UPEEP) to strengthen electrical engineering competencies, especially skills tied to solar, battery installations, and nuclear energy.

The partnership will support capability-building programs, technical research, and innovation to enhance the professional knowledge and competencies of electrical engineers.

The collaboration comes as the power sector adopts more technical and emerging energy solutions, requiring engineers to keep pace with developments in solar, battery storage, energy efficiency, and even possible nuclear energy deployment.

Meralco and UPEEP said the agreement will provide engineering support in strengthening industry standards for solar and battery installations, while also building technical competencies for nuclear energy.

The signing was led by Meralco Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ronnie L. Aperocho, Meralco Senior Vice President and Head of Distribution Utility Subsidiaries and Strategic Partnerships Ferdinand O. Geluz, UPEEP National President Jovenie F. Tagatac, and UPEEP National Vice President for External Affairs Mark Anjelo U. Estrada.

As part of the collaboration, Meralco and UPEEP will jointly conduct technical training programs, collaborate on advanced research, establish knowledge-sharing platforms, and develop strategies aligned with the national roadmap for energy efficiency and sustainability.

“For UPEEP, joining hands with Meralco is a dynamic alliance. Through this MOU, we are successfully blending high-level institutional capability with the hands-on expertise of our professional electrical engineers,” Tagatac said.

Meralco COO Ronnie L. Aperocho said the future of the power industry will depend not only on technology, but also on workforce capability.

“At Meralco, we firmly believe that the future of our industry will be shaped not only by technology, but by the capabilities of our people,” Aperocho said.

He said the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to advancing the electrical engineering profession, strengthening technical excellence, and contributing to a safer, more innovative, and future-ready energy sector.

Can stronger engineering training and standards help the power sector keep pace with solar, battery, and nuclear-related developments?
