The National Transmission Corporation (TransCo) has joined the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Faculty of Engineering External Advisory Committee (ExACom), strengthening industry-academe collaboration aimed at aligning engineering education with the evolving needs of the Philippine energy sector.
The partnership was formalized through the signing of a memorandum of understanding during the IM-PaCT 2026: UST Engineering Partners Summit held on May 19 to 20 as part of UST’s 415th Founding Anniversary celebration.
TransCo was represented by Maria Theresa Laranang, vice president for the Resource Management and Services Group.
Under the partnership, TransCo will provide industry knowledge, technical expertise, and institutional experience to help support curriculum development and ensure UST engineering programs remain responsive to emerging technologies and industry requirements.
The state-run transmission asset owner said the collaboration will also open opportunities for engineering students through priority internship consideration, giving students early exposure to the country’s power transmission sector and broader energy industry.
“Through this partnership, TransCo reaffirms its commitment to supporting the development of future engineers and contributing to a stronger, more responsive, and innovation-driven energy sector,” the corporation said.
What impact could deeper industry participation in engineering education have on the country’s long-term energy workforce and infrastructure development?
