ERC cites Meralco for leading Luzon in customer choice programs

Meralco has been recognized by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) for having the largest number of participants in customer choice programs in Luzon.

The recognition highlights the power distributor’s role in supporting government-led initiatives that give qualified customers greater flexibility in choosing their electricity suppliers.

Meralco Senior Vice President and Head of Regulatory Management Atty. Jose Ronald Valles received the award from ERC officials led by Chairperson and CEO Atty. Francis Saturnino C. Juan.

Department of Energy Secretary Sharon Garin was also present during the ceremony.

Meralco said it has been actively advancing customer choice programs such as Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA), the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP), and the Retail Aggregation Program (RAP).

RCOA allows qualified electricity customers to directly choose and contract with their preferred power supplier.

The GEOP allows eligible customers to source electricity from renewable energy suppliers, while the RAP allows smaller users to combine demand so they can participate in supplier choice as a group.

Meralco said the recognition reflects its commitment to supporting initiatives that empower consumers and promote a more competitive electricity market.

The award comes as regulators continue to expand customer participation in retail electricity programs, which are intended to give consumers more options beyond traditional distribution utility supply arrangements.
