Alternergy Holdings Corp. has energized the transmission facilities of its 128-megawatt (MW) Tanay Wind Project in Rizal, marking a major commissioning milestone as the renewable energy facility moves closer to commercial operations and power delivery to the Luzon grid.
The company said the milestone covers the successful energization of the project’s 500-kilovolt (kV) substation and transmission facilities, which connect the wind farm to the national grid. Alternergy said the 500-kV substation is the largest it has built to date.
The energization confirms that the project’s electrical systems are ready for integrated testing before commercial operations begin, paving the way for the facility to start generating revenue once it enters service.
“The successful energization of the Tanay Wind Project brings us another step closer to delivering clean, reliable energy to Filipino consumers,” Alternergy President Gerry Magbanua said.
“This is also particularly significant because it represents the first wind project energized under the Department of Energy’s Green Energy Auction Program II (GEAP II), strengthening the country’s renewable energy infrastructure and supports the Philippines’ transition toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy future,” he added.
The Tanay Wind Project was awarded under the Department of Energy’s Green Energy Auction Program II in 2023. Once operational, the project will have a capacity of 128 MW and is expected to generate about 283.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable electricity annually—enough to supply around 118,125 households, according to the company.
Alternergy also said the facility is equipped with 8-MW wind turbines, which it described as the largest installed in Southeast Asia outside China.
Magbanua credited the project’s progress to collaboration among government agencies, local government units, host communities, contractors, lenders and project partners.
“This achievement reflects the dedication and expertise of our entire project team, as well as the strong collaboration among government agencies, the provincial government of Rizal, the Municipality of Tanay, our host communities, contractors, lenders, and project partners,” he said.
The company said the project is expected to avoid an estimated 197,780 metric tons of carbon emissions annually once fully operational.
The Tanay Wind Project is one of four renewable energy facilities that Alternergy expects to begin commercial operations this year as it works toward adding 500 MW of renewable energy capacity in 2026. The company also secured awards for five projects with a combined capacity of up to 500 MW under the DOE’s Green Energy Auction Program 4.
