Meralco files raps over viral meter removal incident in Rizal

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has filed a criminal complaint against individuals involved in the unauthorized removal of an electric meter, following a viral incident that raised concerns over consumer protection and enforcement protocols in distribution utilities.

In a statement, Meralco said the incident occurred on April 8, 2026, in a subdivision in Rodriguez, Rizal, where a man was seen forcibly removing a resident’s electric meter despite objections from the homeowner and without presenting proof of identity or authorization.

The utility said its investigation found that the individual was acting on orders of the property owner. It has since filed a criminal complaint for malicious mischief before the Rizal Provincial Prosecution Office against two individuals, citing deliberate damage to company property.

Meralco said it immediately restored the affected customer’s electricity service and launched an investigation upon learning of the incident.

“We would like to emphasize once again that electric meters are property of Meralco and any unauthorized removal or damage is illegal and subject to legal action,” said Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga.

“We once again remind the public that all legitimate Meralco employees and contractors are in uniform with company ID, carry official field orders, and use clearly marked vehicles,” he added.

Zaldarriaga urged the public to promptly report any illegal activities to Meralco and the appropriate authorities, adding that the company will continue coordinating with law enforcement to curb violations and safeguard its customers.

Meralco said customers may report service concerns through the My Meralco app, its official social media channels, SMS hotlines, or its customer service hotline.
