Manila Electric Company (Meralco), in coordination with the Philippine National Police (PNP), dismantled an illegal electric meter selling operation in Sta. Cruz, Manila on January 13, recovering allegedly stolen meters that were being refurbished and sold online.
In a statement, Meralco said the joint operation led to the recovery of 12 electric meters believed to have been stolen from the company. The operation forms part of an intensified campaign against electricity pilferage.
According to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group of the PNP, the operation was the result of a series of surveillance activities conducted with Meralco’s support. Authorities said the scheme involved stealing electric meters, refurbishing them, and reselling them through online platforms.
Meralco said it will file charges against the establishment involved in the unlawful trade of the stolen meters. “We commend the swift action of the PNP in addressing this illegal activity. We assure our customers that Meralco remains committed to working closely with authorities to protect the integrity of electricity service and ensure public safety,” said Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga.
The company reiterated that stealing and reselling electric meters and other power distribution materials violate Republic Act No. 7832, or the Anti-Electricity Pilferage Act, which is punishable by imprisonment and/or a fine ranging from P50,000 to P100,000.
Meralco also warned that buyers or users of stolen meters may face penalties under Presidential Decree No. 1612, or the Anti-Fencing Law of 1972. Zaldarriaga urged the public to report suspicious activities involving Meralco facilities, including electric meters and power cables.
