MGEN, partners channel PHP 800,000 in aid to earthquake-hit Sarangani

Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGEN) has mobilized PHP 800,000 in relief assistance for communities affected by the recent magnitude 7.8 Mindanao earthquake, distributing relief packs and drinking water to more than 3,000 individuals in Sarangani.

The relief operations were conducted in partnership with One Meralco Foundation (OMF) to help address immediate needs on the ground, including access to basic food items and clean drinking water.

Of the total assistance, PHP 300,000 came from an employee donation drive, with MGEN matching the contributions raised by its workforce. The proceeds were turned over to OMF to support the distribution of aid to affected families.

MGEN’s thermal business arm also contributed PHP 500,000 to the Conrado and Ladislawa Alcantara Foundation, Inc. (CLAFI) to support localized relief operations and humanitarian response efforts in Sarangani.

“Our priority is to help address the immediate needs of families affected by the Sarangani earthquake. We are grateful to our employees and partners for extending support where it is needed most,” said MGEN President and CEO Emmanuel V. Rubio.

MGEN said the response reflects its continuing commitment to support communities during emergencies, particularly in areas where its subsidiaries and business affiliates operate.

In Sarangani, MGEN has a 50% equity stake in Alsons Thermal Energy Corporation (ATEC), a Mindanao-based power generation holding company that wholly owns Sarangani Energy Corporation (SEC).

SEC owns and operates a 210-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Maasim, Sarangani.

MGEN operates through its thermal, renewable energy, and natural gas businesses. As of May 2026, the company’s portfolio represented a combined net saleable capacity of 5,069.7 megawatts from traditional and renewable sources, along with 56.4 megawatt-hours of battery energy storage system capacity.

As Mindanao communities recover from the recent earthquake, how can energy companies strengthen their role in supporting disaster response and resilience in host areas?
