The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) conducted its yearly Blackout Drills to refine its plans and enhance grid reliability and security, preparing for contingencies such as extensive power outages or disturbances.
In a statement, NGCP stated that the drills were in accordance with the Philippine Grid Code, aiming to harmonize the responses of energy sector participants in the event of widespread power interruptions.
“This annual Blackout Drill is crucial for all our stakeholders as it shows preparedness, response efficiency, strong coordination, and public awareness. By fostering shared understanding about the importance of each stakeholder’s role and responsibilities we can ensure the timely dissemination of critical information to the public, and the continuity of essential services during power grid disturbances,” said NGCP.
Mirroring previous years, the drill consisted of practical simulation exercises as well as table top discussions.
The topics discussed included blackout restoration guidelines and procedures, breakout sessions, black start services, and workshops aimed at area-specific blackout restoration strategies.
A simulation exercise to replicate a real-world blackout was also conducted.
Participants in the drills included members of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), the Department of Energy (DOE), and individuals from the generation and distribution sectors.
