The Manila Electric Company (MERALCO) has joined forces with New NAIA Infra Corporation (NNIC) to support the modernization of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

In a statement, MERALCO emphasized that the partnership aims to ensure the airport’s ability to meet the demands of modern aviation while enhancing operational efficiency and resilience as the distribution utility (DU) firm supplies sustainable and reliable energy solutions.

“By enhancing power reliability for the new NAIA, we are going to help empower the tourism and travel industry, support economic growth and enrich the travel experience for countless travelers. We look forward to fostering a long-term partnership with NNIC,” said MERALCO Chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan.

As part of the partnership, a new 115 kilovolt (kV) – 34.5 kV GIS substation would be built to supply power to NAIA’s four terminals. This would complement the existing NAIA 3 substation, which features two 83 MVA transformer banks and six 34.5 kV underground feeders to enhance reliability.

Construction of the new substation will begin in the third quarter of 2025 and is expected to be completed in December 2026.

Additionally, the distribution utility (DU) is partnering with  NNIC to implement an underground power distribution network designed to support the airport’s operational needs through 2026. Field surveys and data sharing for this project are set to begin this December.

At the same time, MERALCO subsidiary MSERV is set to deploy a 4,900 kilovolt-amperes (KVA) uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system across six key areas, including NAIA Terminal 3 and the airfield. This system will ensure a seamless power supply for critical operations, further bolstering the airport’s infrastructure resilience.

These projects in the pipeline demonstrate the collaboration’s commitment to delivering infrastructure that meets the most rigorous international standards.

“NNIC and Meralco said they remain steadfast in their mission to enable NAIA’s transformation into a modern, sustainable, and efficient airport that Filipinos can take pride in. This partnership is also expected to play a key role in supporting the country’s economic growth and strengthening its position as a major player in global aviation,” said MERALCO.
