SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp., the largest steel manufacturer in the Philippines, has taken a major step toward sustainable industrial practices by commissioning its first solar rooftop photovoltaic (PV) system. The 1.9 megawatt-peak (MWp) system, installed at the company’s Meycauayan steel plant in Bulacan, was developed in partnership with TotalEnergies ENEOS Renewables Philippines Project Corp.

The newly operational solar facility, consisting of over 3,200 solar modules, is projected to generate approximately 2,700 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable electricity annually. This initiative marks a key milestone in SteelAsia’s broader commitment to reducing its carbon footprint by integrating renewable energy sources into its operations.

SteelAsia President Andre Sy and Ingrid Jaumain, Zone Director of TotalEnergies ENEOS, attended the commissioning ceremony of the solar system at the Meycauayan plant.

SteelAsia’s shift to renewable power aligns with global trends, as heavy industries worldwide face increasing pressure to curb emissions and adopt sustainable practices. Beyond the environmental benefits, investments in renewable energy may enhance operational resilience against fluctuating fossil fuel costs and potential future carbon regulations.

SteelAsia has already implemented geothermal energy in its Calaca green steel plant and Compostela, Cebu rolling mill. The addition of solar power in Meycauayan further cements the company’s position as a leader in sustainable manufacturing within the region.

As major industries in the Philippines begin to embrace renewable energy, what should be the next steps to accelerate this transition? Should the government provide stronger incentives for companies to invest in clean energy, or should the responsibility lie primarily with the private sector? Share your thoughts below.
