Philippines Sets Guinness Record for Largest Solar Lamp Display

The Philippines has earned a new Guinness World Record for the largest display of solar-powered lamps, with 3,500 hand-built lights showcased at Rizal Park in Manila. This is all thanks to the global grassroots movement Liter of Light.

According to the Liter of Light facebook page, the official unveiling took place on July 2, 2025, at Liwasang Rizal, making this the first world record of its kind in the country. The record-setting installation itself was completed on June 30, 2025.

Each of the 3,500 lamps was built using traditional ceramic techniques by women-led cooperatives, thus reflecting a blend of sustainability and community-based craftsmanship. Before being distributed to communities in need, the lamps are being exhibited at the National Museum of the Philippines during the first week of July.

“This is more than just light- it’s a future where no Filipino child is left in the dark,” said Illac Diaz, Founder and Executive Director of Liter of Light. “By sharing this skill of hand-built solar lights that can be repaired and reproduced on a village level, this allows us to scale the number of people we help in the future. Through this world milestone in sustainability, we are showing the world that grassroots action can drive global change, one solar lamp at a time.”

The record-setting initiative is part of the Circle of Light, a collaboration led by Sun Life Philippines in partnership with Liter of Light, the National Museum, and Odangputik Art Space. Volunteers from various groups, including the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Rotary International, the Philippine Coast Guard, Firefly Brigade, Youth for Dagat, and students from Metro Manila universities, also helped create the lamps.

After the exhibit, the lamps will be donated to underserved students and families, especially in Region 4A, through a partnership with the Department of Education.

This achievement adds to Liter of Light’s growing list of international sustainability milestones. The group previously created the world’s largest solar portrait of Dr. Jose Rizal at the same location using thousands of similar lamps. Globally, the organization has earned Guinness records for the largest solar-powered light bulb display in the UAE and the largest solar lamp display in India.

Liter of Light continues to be recognized as a global leader in climate action, youth engagement, and sustainable innovation through locally driven solutions.
