Meralco teams up with QC, ERC to fast-track solar adoption

Meralco has joined forces with the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) and the Quezon City local government to expand renewable energy (RE) adoption, with a focus on streamlining net-metering and distributed energy resource (DER) applications.

The tripartite agreement, signed on August 4, aims to develop public-private models that support the national goal of increasing RE’s share in the energy mix to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040.

“One of our core priorities in Quezon City has always been to make energy cleaner, more reliable, and more accessible not just for our whole operations but for households and businesses in our city,” said Quezon City Mayor Josefina “Joy” G. Belmonte. “Through this agreement with ERC and Meralco, we’re putting systems in place, clear processes, better coordination, and stronger support so that more stakeholders can take part in our clean energy transition.”

Under the agreement, Meralco will set up a booth within Quezon City Hall to assist residents with net metering and DER applications, while the LGU will handle logistics and the ERC will provide technical and regulatory guidance.

Quezon City currently leads Meralco’s franchise area with nearly 2,500 net metering customers as of end-July—both in terms of customer count and total installed capacity.

“The net metering program is one of the best examples of how we can empower ordinary Filipinos to participate directly in crafting our nation’s energy destiny,” said ERC Chairperson Monalisa C. Dimalanta.

Meralco also pledged to provide expert support for information and education campaigns, and to share its experience in interconnecting RE systems.

Meralco Senior Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer Ferdinand O. Geluz emphasized the importance of the collaboration: “As we move forward, Meralco remains fully committed in reinforcing our support to the government’s initiatives and thrust in renewable energy and energy transition and in making a lasting impact—not just in the lives of our customers but to the progress of our nation.”

The initiative follows a similar partnership formed in Pasig City, reinforcing Meralco’s commitment to replicate scalable RE collaborations across its franchise area.
