As Severe Tropical Storm (STS) Tino approaches, the Philippine energy sector has activated emergency protocols to safeguard power and fuel services and minimize disruptions for affected communities.

The Department of Energy (DOE) deployed its Task Force on Energy Resiliency and coordinated with the National Inter-Agency Coordinating Cell to monitor the storm’s impact and streamline recovery operations.

“Our priority is the safety and well-being of the communities we serve,” said Undersecretary Felix William B. Fuentebella, Chair of the Task Force on Energy Resiliency. “We are closely coordinating with power generators, the transmission provider, distribution utilities, electric cooperatives, and fuel suppliers to prepare for the impact of the storm and to ensure efficient restoration efforts immediately after.”

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has prepositioned repair crews and reinforced communication lines, while electric cooperatives are clearing potential hazards from power lines. Diesel power plants under the National Power Corporation–Small Power Utilities Group (NPC-SPUG) in Bohol are on standby following precautionary evacuations by local authorities.

DOE officials are also tracking fuel supply chains, prioritizing access for emergency services and critical facilities. Fuentebella encouraged households to stock emergency essentials, keep phones charged, and have power provider hotlines ready for outage reporting.

The DOE emphasized that the sector is fully prepared to restore services quickly, reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s energy resilience amid extreme weather.
