Meralco Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ronnie L. Aperocho urged Filipino electrical engineers to strengthen their commitment to ethical practice and continuous learning as the energy sector faces rising technical and operational demands.
Speaking at the 8th National Convention of the United Professional Electrical Engineers of the Philippines, Aperocho said engineering is a profession defined by responsibility to the public. He encouraged engineers to maintain high standards of practice and expand their skills as new technologies enter the grid.
He emphasized the importance of accountability and safety in engineering work. “As professionals, we must call out shortcuts that risk lives, regardless of whose interests they serve,” he said. “We must engage constructively with regulators to shape rules that encourage innovation while protecting safety and fairness.”
He also highlighted his advocacy for innovation and operational excellence within Meralco, where he has held key leadership roles across its subsidiaries. Aperocho, who topped the 1991 Registered Electrical Engineering Licensure Examination, has led initiatives aimed at improving service quality and delivering benefits to consumers.
His approach is grounded in integrity, compassion, and a sense of duty to the communities Meralco serves. Aperocho’s contributions to the industry were recognized by the Professional Regulation Commission, which named him the Outstanding Professional of the Year in Electrical Engineering in 2024.
He closed his message by emphasizing the vital role engineers play in shaping the country’s future. “Electrical engineering is the backbone of the future because we power the future,” he concluded.
How can continued professional development strengthen the engineering workforce in a rapidly evolving energy landscape?
