SN Aboitiz Power secures financing for 80-MW BESS in Benguet

SN Aboitiz Power (SNAP) has locked in financing for two battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Benguet with a combined capacity of 80 megawatts (MW).

In a disclosure dated February 3, the company announced the projects include a 40-MW BESS at the Binga Hydroelectric Power Plant (Phase 2) and another 40-MW BESS at the Ambuklao Hydroelectric Power Plant. Both facilities will be co-located within the existing hydro plants.

The battery systems are designed to participate in the Luzon reserves market, providing fast-response ancillary services that help maintain grid stability and manage real-time fluctuations.

SNAP said battery storage plays an ever-growing role in supporting power system reliability as more intermittent renewable energy sources are added to the grid. “Battery energy storage systems help ensure grid stability by providing rapid response services that support system reliability,” the company stated in the release.

The new projects build on SNAP’s existing storage assets, including a 24-MW BESS at the Magat Hydroelectric Power Plant, which has already been delivering ancillary services since 2024.

The company also has additional BESS projects under development, including a 40-MW system at Binga and a 16-MW facility at Magat. Both of these projects are scheduled to begin commercial operations later this year.

Once all operational and ongoing projects are completed, SNAP’s total battery storage capacity will reach 160 MW.

SNAP is a joint venture between Aboitiz Renewables and Scatec ASA, and forms part of Aboitiz Power Corporation’s renewable energy portfolio.
