AboitizPower plans to pursue additional investments in Vietnam spanning coal, natural gas, and renewable energy projects as the company expands its presence in one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing power markets.
The company outlined its interest in expanding its Vietnam portfolio during a meeting between Aboitiz Group executives and Vietnamese President To Lam, who is on a two-day state visit to the Philippines.
The planned expansion comes as AboitizPower awaits government approval for its USD 220-million acquisition of a 25% stake in Van Phong Power Company Limited, owner of an operational 1,320-megawatt high-efficiency, low-emission coal-fired power plant in Khánh Hòa Province.
The transaction, announced in October 2025, marks the company’s first major international investment.
“We are keen to continue investing in Vietnam’s power sector. This will span both more coal power investments, gas, and especially renewable energy as your country continues to require more energy generation given the demand for growth,” said AboitizPower Chief Financial Officer Sandro Aboitiz.
The discussions with President Lam also highlighted broader opportunities for cooperation between Philippine and Vietnamese businesses in sectors including food security, infrastructure, trade, and tourism.
Aboitiz Foods, which entered Vietnam in 2014 through Pilmico’s acquisition of Vinh Hoan 1 Feed JSC, recently expanded its operations in the country with a USD 45-million feed mill in Long An Province. The facility is capable of producing up to 300,000 metric tons of livestock and animal nutrition feed annually.
Meanwhile, Aboitiz InfraCapital is seeking to strengthen connectivity between the Philippines and Vietnam by expanding direct air links between Cebu and key Vietnamese cities through the Mactan-Cebu International Airport.
According to Aboitiz, President Lam expressed support for deeper engagement between Vietnamese and Philippine businesses as both countries pursue shared development goals.
