Despite its divestment from coal assets in the Philippines, Korea Electric Power Company (KEPCO) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the country’s clean energy transition, focusing on renewable energy expansion, smart grid modernization, and potential nuclear energy cooperation.

In a courtesy meeting with Energy Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla on February 25, 2025, KEPCO President Kim Dong-Cheol emphasized the company’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and its interest in leveraging Korea’s advanced energy infrastructure to support the Philippines’ evolving power sector.

KEPCO President Kim said Korea continues to benefit from a highly stable power grid on the back of its Intelligent Digital Power (IDP) management system, which leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to minimize transmission and distribution losses as well as prevent power outages.

Korea also has a well-established nuclear power industry, and KEPCO’s expertise in nuclear technology and plant operations could provide the Philippines with critical insights as it evaluates nuclear power integration. KEPCO’s participation in nuclear feasibility studies, regulatory frameworks, and potential infrastructure investments could support the country’s efforts to diversify its energy sources and achieve a stable, low-carbon power supply.

KEPCO’s presence in the country involves a 300-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Naga City, Cebu—a joint venture between its subsidiary, KEPCO Philippines Holdings Inc., and the Cebu-based company SPC Power—and a 63.3 MW solar farm in Calatagan, Batangas, through a 38% stake in Solar Philippines Calatagan Corp.

“We welcome KEPCO’s continued commitment to the Philippine energy sector, particularly in advancing renewable energy, smart grid technology, and nuclear energy cooperation. As the Philippines pursues a just and inclusive energy transition, partnerships with experienced and forward-looking companies like KEPCO will be instrumental in strengthening our energy security and sustainability. We recognize KEPCO’s expertise in intelligent digital power management and appreciate its efforts to share the best practices that can enhance the efficiency and reliability of our own power grid. We look forward to further collaboration in building a cleaner, more resilient, and technology-driven energy future for the country,” Secretary Lotilla said.

KEPCO’s commitment to the country through continuous clean energy investments and knowledge transfer underscores the strong cooperation between Korea and the Philippines, as well as the company’s long-term confidence in the country’s energy market.
