With over three months left in his administration, Pres. Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Atty. Melvin Matibag as acting Cabinet Secretary replacing Karlo Nograles, who was appointed as Chairman of the Civil Service Commission.

Matibag, who had served as President and CEO of the National Transmission Corporation (TransCo), is the secretary-general of the PDP-Laban wing led by Energy Sec. Alfonso Cusi — Duterte’s party. He took his oath before Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea on Wednesday morning.

“Atty. Matibag has proven his managerial capabilities and qualifications throughout the positions he has held in various institutions, including [TransCo], PDP-Laban, Manila International Airport Authority, [and] Laguna Lake Development Authority, among others,” the Palace statement reads.

The PDP-Laban Cusi wing did not field its own presidential and vice presidential bets. However, it has endorsed the vice presidential bid of Duterte’s daughter Sara, who currently sits as Davao City Mayor.
