NGCP targets completion of 7 major transmission projects in 2026

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has announced its goal of completing seven major transmission projects in its 2026 pipeline in order to strengthen grid stability and address ever-growing demand.

The projects, which each carry multi-billion peso investments approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), include several high-voltage transmission lines across the country.

Among the line projects set for completion are the Amlan–Dumaguete 138kV transmission line (PHP 1.9 billion), the Tuguegarao–Lal-lo (Magapit) 230kV transmission line (PHP 2.4 billion), the Nabas–Caticlan–Boracay 138kV line (PHP 4.2 billion), and the Tacurong–Kalamansig 69kV transmission line (PHP 757.98 million).

Other projects the NGCP is working to complete are the Tuy 500/230kV Substation Stage 1 project, which is valued at PHP 8.1 billion, along with Stage 2 of its Visayas Substation Reliability Project as well as the relocation of steel poles along the Hermosa–Duhat 230kV transmission line.

NGCP said these projects are designed to address load growth, improve overall system reliability, enhance power quality, and accommodate the entry of new generating plants, which also include new renewable energy facilities. These are also expected to aid in several major backbone and island interconnection initiatives.

In 2025, NGCP completed upgrades and expansions in 14 substations nationwide, including additional transformer capacity installations.

“These accomplishments are a testament to NGCP’s commitment to its mandate of delivering safe, secure, and reliable power transmission services to our customers,” the company stated.

Despite these accomplishments, the NGCP reiterated that right-of-way acquisition and permitting challenges continue to stifle their momentum. “Despite continuing challenges in right-of-way and permitting, we remain committed to the work ahead, and are optimistic in completing these projects within the year,” it stated.

As transmission projects continue to develop alongside new generation capacity, how can permitting and right-of-way processes move more efficiently to sufficiently keep up with grid demand?
